In short time Alex Rodriguez will once again be guarding the third base lines while wearing pinstripes. Rodriguez contacted the Yankees through a mutual friend (Kevin Long?) asking to come back. Hank Steinbrenner reneged on earlier statements that the Yankees would not pursue A-Rod. But who wouldn’t?

Steinbrenner laid down the law of the land. The only way Rodriguez would be able to work out a deal with the Yankees is if he met with Hank and Hal Steinbrenner. A-Rod had to convince the two why he wanted to be a Yankee.  It was first reported that Boras would not be allowed to sit in on the negotiations, however that is a violation of the collective bargaining agreement.

Alex Rodriguez released this statement through his website Arod.com:

“After spending time with Cynthia and my family over these last few weeks, it became clear to me that I needed to make an attempt to engage the Yankees regarding my future with the organization.

Prior to entering into serious negotiations with other clubs, I wanted the opportunity to share my thoughts directly with Yankees' ownership. We know there are other opportunities for us, but Cynthia and I have a foundation with the club that has brought us comfort, stability and happiness.

As a result, I reached out to the Yankees through mutual friends and conveyed that message. I also understand that I had to respond to certain Yankees concerns, and I was receptive and understanding of that situation.

Cynthia and I have since spoken directly with the Steinbrenner family. During these healthy discussions, both sides were able to share honest feelings and hopes with one another, and we expect to continue this dialogue with the Yankees over the next few days.”

When Alex Rodriguez opted out of his contract back on game four of the World Series the first thought that went through my mind was anger. Everyone in the baseball world was mad that he did it while the World Series game was going on. I thought it was narcissistic, but I didn’t mind. I was angry because he went against his word that he wanted to remain a Yankee for the rest of his life. Rodriguez wouldn’t even talk with the Yankees before choosing to opt out. His opt out left a big hole at third base for the Yankees.

The Yankees could trade for Miguel Cabrera or Joe Crede? Sign Mike Lowell? None of these players, or any player for that matter could put up A-Rod’s numbers. The Yankees would have had to trade their top prospects for Cabrera. Of course he would put up 115 RBI and 35 homeruns per year, but his defense is declining. Pitching and defense win championships. Alex Rodriguez is a tremendous fielder that puts up unprecedented offensive numbers.

Whether you love or hate Alex Rodriguez, the Yankees are about to re-sign the best player in all of baseball. Do not even argue that he is bad for the team chemistry. If you recall this year, Rodriguez took Cano, Cabrera, and all of the young guys under his wing. He brought the best out of them, and they brought the best out of him. This was the closest Yankee team since 2003.

Alex Rodriguez is going to be named the MVP on November 19, 2007. Wouldn’t it be fitting if the two reach an agreement right before the announcement?
